Luke 2:8
Bruce Lothrop
Many things in Biblical text are short in length, and short on detail, but lend themselves to a great deal of speculation. This is such a verse.
We read a few words about shepherds, spending the night outside, watching their sheep. I picture them on a hillside, with a wide vista of a sleeping Bethlehem below. It is a cold, crystal clear, winter night. A stunning array of stars spread above, and a dark world rests below. All is silent as their misty breath expands and slowly fades after each exhale. They remain alert to movement on the hillside that might mean a wondering sheep, or an approaching predator.
For me, it is an image of peaceful contemplation. Perhaps the Shepherds recall the Creation Hymn of Genesis I. They see the light created in the heavens, the earth, lifted from primordial chaos, the dark homes of God’s created people, and animals with whose care they are charged. The order of creation seems evident in this vison of the scene.
This is the perfect setting for a moment of Advent. This is a moment to feel our connection with the creator of all. This is the peaceful waiting, soon to be interrupted by events that will reorder the world. Are you ready?
Lord,
Meet us in the quiet moments
Touch our hearts in stillness
Be with us in peaceful times
Where we may experience awe at the wonder of all your creation.
Amen
