The mission of Arusha Lutheran Medical Center is to serve, treat, and minister to the whole person; in body, mind, and spirit. ALMC strives to attain this mission by providing competent and compassionate medical care, by promoting health development community projects, and by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ.
A hospital of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania – Arusha Diocese, ALMC has grown from a dispensary with a single building and ten beds into a 120 bed, full-service hospital offering outpatient and inpatient services including medicine, pediatric, general and specialty surgical and Orthopedic Institute, obstetric, maternal and child health, hospice and orphan care serving 50,000 outpatients annually. They do this at a cost to the patient of approximately $3 per outpatient visit, $5 per day inpatient which includes laboratory tests and medicine.
The PLASTER HOUSE provides long-term post-operative care for children whose conditions do not allow immediate return to their home environments. Most leg surgeries require four weeks at the Plaster House. Besides the children’s rooms, the facility includes a kitchen, library, staff rooms and a garden.
The SCHOOL OF NURSING opened in 2014 to address Tanzania’s 50% shortage of nursing staff and to recruit local students into nursing and serving in local hospitals. The school’s mission is to prepare nurses to apply their skills and knowledge to improve the lives of others.
Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester, VA has a longstanding relationship with Arusha Lutheran Medical Center. Through the generosity of sponsorships, donations and volunteering of time and talents, Bethel has helped enrich the lives of many very grateful children and adults, and has contributed to the training of medical students and nurses in Tanzania.
